Summary "The analysis of change in learning and development has long been an area of scholarly focus at Penn State, particularly in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. A distinguishing feature of this research emphasis has been the integration of theory and methods in developmental systems--a perspective that has come to be known as developmental systems theory. Recently, a number of new approaches have been published from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. Our opening introductory chapter outlines these thematic influences. The general push is to the study of the individual over the life span in the many contexts of learning and development. In this volume we bring together established and emerging scientists who lead the way in the development of innovative statistical methods to apply systems theoretical models to individual learning and developmental processes, ranging from mother-infant interaction processes to cognitive aging. This provides the reader with a state-of-the-art overview of the fundamental paradigm of developmental systems science"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
